Despite being rained out on our first try, (May 3rd) the Carnival was held and had a good turnout of over twenty-five players. Most of the kids who showed up were new to tennis and enjoyed some of the activities like the face painting, tattoos, mini-tennis, and hit for prizes. Kids hit sponge balls into a court filled with tennis goodies like wristbands, cans of tennis balls, junior racquets, string, and Frisbees. A free raffle was held and Drew Coffey won the grand prize, a Wilson tennis bag. Andrew Linkous fired a blistering 109mph first serve to become the Men's fast serve contest while Rachel Hutson smacked a 75mph ace to win the Women's contest. I would like to thank all the volunteers who made this a special day including the whole Hutson family, Tom and Christin Shirley, The Delias', Fred Derouchers, and my wife, Ellie Maben. We hope to make this an even bigger and better event next year so as to attract more players to the game.
On Saturday May 10th, twelve players competed in the first Lightning tennis tournament. The event pitted men and junior boy players against
one another in abbreviated matches. Most participants played at least three matches and enjoyed the provided refreshments between matches.
The participants were Zach Linkous, Dave DeAngelis, David King, Paul Maben, Patrick Ashford, Fred Derouchers, Reston Hartsell, Andrew Jolley,
Devansh Patel, Eric Swisher, Jason Cox, Gildas Thoraval, and Curt Duncan. Curt Duncan defeated Andrew Jolley 3-0, 3-1 in one semi-final while
Paul Maben defeated Zach Linkous 3-2, 3-1 in the other semi-final.
Curt Duncan went on to claim the championship by defeating Paul Maben 3-1, 3-1 in the final. Devansh Patel claimed the consolation round
championship by defeating Fred Derouchers in three tight sets. The next men's tournament is scheduled for the end of June.
Contact Paul Maben if you would like to compete.
